Enviroschool is the environmental education outreach program of DEQ. It provides training for communities, businesses, local governments, schools and other organizations on a number of regulatory and environmentally relevant topics. The goal of this program is for the attendees to become informed about the environmental regulatory process and to maintain and improve environmental compliance. In late September, the Bayou Vermilion District announced the start of five projects designed to help reduce the quantity of storm water while improving the water quality that enters into the Vermilion River.
The projects were awarded as part of 319 water quality
improvement demonstration grants from the Louisiana
Department of Environmental Quality.

St Landry Parish is holding a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, Saturday, Nov. 5 at two locations and it is open to all residents of St Landry Parish. In Opelousas, residents can drop off their waste at 2717 W Landry Street from 8am to 12 noon and in Eunice at 450 N. C. C. Duson Street from 8:30 am to noon. Residents must show proof of residency.

Throughout the spring of 2011, DEQ conducted a series of open burning and storm sewer system workshops across the state. The workshops were presented to inform the public and assist municipalities with understanding regulations while doing their part to enhance the quality of the environment. The Department of Environmental Quality supports local programs and organizations that take voluntary steps to protect the environment. One community organization, Cajuns for Bayou Teche, is dedicated to preserving and protecting the habitat along Bayou Teche in St. Martin Parish. The group is organizing a cleanup effort on Saturday, Sept. 24, starting at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Breaux Bridge boat launch, located behind St. Bernard School, 251 E. Bridge St. in Breaux Bridge.

Municipalities in St. Landry, St. Martin and Iberia parishes have agreed to test water quality on Bayou Teche on a quarterly basis. Eric Martin represented St. Martinville as mayor for more than 15 years and initiated the effort. Martin says, �Long term water quality monitoring is important if we want to promote recreational use such as, canoeing, fishing and swimming in Bayou Teche. Pending approval from the LSU Board of Regents, construction will begin next year on an expansion of the LSU Hilltop Arboretum in Baton Rouge, which will result in a 2,050 square-foot facility at 11855 Highland Road.
